Roundup of the week – 10/52 of 2011
This is the week that we’ve finally felt some reprieve from what felt like a really hot summer. With the marginally cooler weather comes better sleep and more flexibility with regards to outdoor activities, i.e. I can walk Maggie later in the day. I love autumn almost as much as I love spring! There are various reasons why living in the tropics would be nice, but I think I’d miss the seasons (especially since our Mediterranean climate winters are relatively mild).
Speaking of Maggie, we celebrated her first birthday on Wednesday. She’s a very sweet dog, but quite a handful. I though Bassets were supposed to be lazy and sedate! This one is as stubborn as a mule! But we love her… and she amuses us no end.
I finished with NLP this week, although I will consult with Bennie when I feel the need in future. He has asked me to write a testimonial of how NLP and his coaching has helped me and I will share that in an upcoming blog post. I will say this though – you can’t change your habits, your weight, or your life, without changing the way you think and react. That is where NLP comes in. I will recommend it to anyone.
Food was good this week. My box of bananas all ripened at the same time, so I had to freeze a lot of it, which is not ideal, but will have to suffice for now. I get to have banana ice cream for breakfast though, so I’m not complaining!
In the spirit of trying something new every week (it could be anything – an exercise, a food item, etc), I bought a dragon fruit this week. It’s obviously imported, and as such it’s quite pricey, but I wanted to try it.
My verdict? It’s nice, but not great. I much prefer kiwi fruit. For the same price I bought four large juicy mangoes, which really pleased me, so I guess I wouldn’t buy it again, except maybe if I were making a fancy fruit salad (fancy = for guests).
(Also for the same price I could have bought a cup of blueberries. Berries are really expensive in South Africa, as they’re not grown on a large scale. I’m thinking I should start growing my own berries! How hard can it be?)
I felt somewhat tired early in the week. Probably a combination of detoxing and adrenal exhaustion. Fortunately I gained some energy by about Wednesday. I had another lovely yoga class on Thursday and on Friday I actually went back to my old aqua aerobics class. It was great to see my old friends and instructor again! True to form she worked us until I thought my lungs were going to fall out (which might have been handy, since my muscles felt like jelly and I could have used the lungs as flotation devices). I can’t believe how much I missed this class – it really is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. And it works every muscle in your body to exhaustion. I’ll be back on Monday.
I was really stiff last night, but this morning I’m perfectly fine. That, my friends, is one of the prime reasons I’m eating this way. Lots of elite athletes follow a near fruitarian diet, because it significantly lowers their recovery time between workouts, which means they can train harder and more often. That is why Michael Arnstein can run the Leadville 100 Mile Ultra Marathon (at altitude) and win a regular marathon two days later. I fully expected to wake up this morning, barely able to walk, but I’m good as new! I guess I’m an athlete now.
On the web this week, I loved this post by my hero, John Robbins: Jack LaLanne Dies – Who the Fitness Guru Really was. A moving tribute.
This post by Diane was also very good. Do you ever get a break? My take on this? Find a way of living that is healthy, effortless, satisfying and sustainable and let it become part of you, so that you won’t need a break.
I saw my video of the week on Big Girl Bombshell’s blog and just had to share it. I love it!
I can’t review this week without mentioning the dreadful earthquake and tsunami in Japan. My heart goes out to the Japanese people, especially the ones who lost loved ones and all their possessions.
How was your week? Any new experiences?

I added your quote to my sidebar. Very well written.
glad your week went well. I remember your water aerobic days and what a safe/nonimpact, good answer that was for you. Remember not to go too often and to bathe immediately after class so you don’t have an allergic reaction and can continue to participate.

Ah – now i have a name for that pretty fruit! It always intrigued me because it looks so exotic, but when I finally got to taste some, like you, I was disappointed. I’d far rather have kiwi, or blueberries, or mango.
