Hooked on a Feeling

Another one of my goals (on my Goals & Outcomes page) is to brush my body at least 3-5 times per week. I know this might be setting the bar a bit low, but once it becomes a habit, I will probably do it just about every day. But why do it at all? In…
Roundup of the week – 8/52 of 2011
It was another great week for me – week two of my 80-10-10 program. It seems that, while my body is of course always detoxing, there’s currently just a bit more to get rid of and it can get a bit uncomfortable. The three most common areas of detoxification for my body have always been kidneys, bowel and skin. Not only has my skin broken out in all kinds of things, but I am sweating buckets! The best thing to do when detoxing is to stick with the plan, drink lots of water and know that “this too shall pass”. Overall I’m feeling great!
I’m loving the simplicity of the 80-10-10 plan (full review to follow soon!). In fact, my meals are getting simpler and simpler all the time. It is so effortless. I’ve lost 4.4 pounds so far – amazing for someone who hasn’t seen a loss on the scale for 18 months!
As for exercise, I am now walking Maggie every morning and we’re increasing our distance all the time. We found a lovely park with various trails (and security) just around the corner from us, so that will be our new favorite destination.
Of course, Maggie is rapidly becoming the fittest member of this household. In the morning I walk with her and in the evening Craig takes her for a run around the block (before he goes on his real run). She now thinks that I should also run with her – our walks have become rather fast-paced. I can actually see the new muscle in her back legs and she’s lost some pudginess. She now wakes me up in the morning for her walk! Could you refuse this little face? I certainly can’t.
I also started yoga classes this week. Yay me!
I am now meditating twice a day. It has made such a difference to my life! I’m still reaping huge benefits from my NLP sessions.
I’m spending some time in the sun every day, with my feet in the grass, getting both grounded and supplied with Vitamin D at the same time.
I had a Vitamin B12 shot this week, since I’m one of those people (39% of the population, according to clinical studies) who are Vitamin B12 deficient. Whether you eat meat or not, it might be a good idea to have your B12 levels checked from time to time.
My post of the week had me in tears… Tara has lost 110 pounds and wrote a post about each and every decade of that journey. It’s awesome! It will definitely inspire you… Dear Tara Congratulations, Tara! And thanks for the idea…
I also really liked this post by Krissie from Questions for Dessert. Just because you lost your way a bit, doesn’t mean that you are back at Square #1.
My finds of the week were kale and Ray LaMontagne. I don’t know why I’d never heard of him before now… but I downloaded 9 of his songs last night!
My video of the week has got to be this one… I dare you to keep still during this! He’s amazing!
Have a great weekend!

I step out of the ordinary
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve added a page with Goals & Outcomes to this blog (right at the top). I thought long and hard about those goals, because I wanted them to be not only doable, but really meaningful. I will probably do posts about most of them in the near future,…
Woke up from where she was
On Friday night a little Irish quartet had a concert here in Cape Town. You might have heard of them… When this concert was announced in the press, I was buried under tons of work and didn’t even know about it. So, no tickets. I have to admit that in the days leading up to…
And two finger bowls of glass
Craig and I went food shopping yesterday. We hit Fruit & Veg City hard! Yes, that is a whole box of bananas! We go through a lot. The rest of the fruit are nectarines, kiwi, ruby grapefruit, nectarines, plums, apples, mango, grapes, pears, limes and pineapples. The veggies are lettuce, avocados, English cucumber, radishes, mushrooms,…
Roundup of the week – 7/52 of 2011
I’ve decided to do a little roundup post every week, to share things that didn’t make it into my posts of the week and to highlight the things that moved, inspired or interested me on the web during the course of the week.
I knew on Monday already that I was going to do this, but I have to admit, I forgot to make notes during the week, so this is going to be a rather short post.
First of all, there will be a new theme every month. Just like I don’t wear the same clothes and jewelry every day, I can’t look at the same theme month in and out. Call me fickle.
I have also changed the pages a bit, so if you’re new here, please visit the About Me page. There’s a page with my goals and desired outcomes as well. I will report back on those in some way or the other – maybe on a monthly basis. Then there’s a page for progress pictures. So far it only has a starting picture, but I will take a new pic on the first of every month and then maybe make a slideshow so that we can compare. I might also put monthly weigh-ins there – I’m still in two minds about it.
This was the week that we went raw and vegan in fell swoop. It’s been awesome, until this morning, when I suddenly woke up in detox purgatory. Oh well, I’ll take plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest and I should be fine in a day or two. It’s all good.
Other than that, the week went really well. This is so effortless. And, for the first time in my life I’m actually logging my calories. Not to restrict myself, but to ensure that I don’t under-eat. I don’t do it every day, but every few days to see that I’m still on the right track. I use Nutridiary and I’m happy to note that I am meeting all my nutritional requirements on this plan. Among other things I found out that my body fat percentage is 65%. Yikes!
I especially want to give a shout-out to Ryan, who is going vegetarian for 120 days after reading and getting inspired by The No Meat Athlete’s Marathon Roadmap. Ryan, my friend, you are in for an interesting and eye-opening time. It is no coincidence that most of the world’s elite athletes are vegetarian, vegan, and increasingly raw vegan. Just remember to keep it whole and simple. A junk-food vegetarian is no healthier than a junk-food meat-eater.
My comment of the week comes from the 30 Bananas a Day forum in reply to someone who was on the verge of falling off the wagon (how amazing to ask for support BEFORE you fall!):
How can you fall off a wagon that you are the master of?
Go at your own pace… You can look waaaay ahead… and waaaay behind… but you are where you are. That is the truth.
Make peace with where you are. Pitch a tent. Make a campfire.
The best part of the journey is where you currently sit…’cause it’s all yours.
I don’t know about you, but this comment really, really spoke to me. I was tempted write a blog post around it, but you know what, these words say it all. I might actually print them out and stick them up on my fridge.
I read a lot of blogs with excellent posts, but the one that stuck in my mind this week comes from Diana, The Scale Junkie - Six Pounds.
I am currently reading Last Light by Alex Scarrow. It’s a frightening and fascinating work of fiction about the immediate breakdown of civilization when the oil supply gets interrupted. It’s fiction, but it’s entirely plausible.
My favorite video of the week has got the be this one:
All the best for the week ahead!
PS. My Valentine’s roses are now at their most beautiful. They have been reminding me all week that I am loved and cherished, and will continue to do so for a good few days yet.
Look inside you and be strong
I ended off my previous post by saying that change is hard, but that we just have to suck it up and do it anyway. That same afternoon I had my NLP session and, as usual, we spent some time discussing my latest insights. I brought up my blog post. Bennie (and some of my…
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
The Force has not been with me this past week. I’ve just felt kind of bleh. And when that happens, I start beating myself up. You’re never going to get ahead. You’re lazy. You don’t have what it takes. You’re not good enough… You will NEVER be good enough. Just as well I’m working with…
To love you with the sweetest of devotion
Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m wishing you a day filled with love. And don’t wait for love to find you. Love yourself. Today and every other day. Abundantly. ‘Cause you’re worth it!
Life has been patiently waiting for me
Came across this video the other day and absolutely LOVED it!
We’ve been “transitioning” for over a week now and are ready to take the plunge.
Bring it on, Baby!
